About Our
Pack -
Woodbury
Pack 148
is located in upstate New York. We
belong to the Hudson Valley Council / Hudson River District of the Boy
Scouts of America. Our pack has been chartered since 1971
by the Woodbury American Legion Post #779.
We have about 70
registered scouts in over a dozen dens. Most of our Tiger cubs
(1st graders) attend Smith Clove Elementary School, and typically live
in the vicinity of Central Valley, Highland Mills, Harriman, Woodbury, Monroe, and
Tuxedo New York..
Our Pack activities are set around the
Woodbury community and
its resources, and we are
annually recognized by the BSA as a Quality Unit.
We avidly participate in local parades, town events, and district/council
events.
About
Scouting -
If you could
give your boy the greatest gift of all, what would it be? It wouldn’t be
money or anything money can buy. Whether you’re rich or poor, the
greatest gift is within your power because that gift helps a boy become
a person with a good feeling about himself and a genuine concern for
others. Cub Scouting can help you provide this gift.
Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped younger boys through
Cub Scouting. It is a year-round family program designed for boys who
are in the first grade through fifth grade (or 7, 8, 9, and 10 years of
age). Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to achieve the
purposes of Cub Scouting.
Purpose -
Scouting is FUN, with a purpose. There are ten specific purposes
that the Cub Scouting program delivers:
- Character
Development
- Spiritual
Growth
- Good
Citizenship
-
Sportsmanship & Fitness
- Family
Understanding
- Respectful
Relationships
- Personal
Achievement
- Friendly
Service
- Fun &
Adventure

Preparation for Boy Scouts
Organization -
Boys join a
Cub Scout Pack, and are divided into Dens, usually a neighborhood group
of six to eight boys. Tiger Cubs (first-graders), Wolf Cubs
(second-grade), Bear Cubs (third-grade), and Webelos Scouts (fourth and
fifth-graders).
Scout
meetings loosely follow the school year. Once each month, all of
the Dens and family members gather for a Pack Meeting, under the
direction of a Cubmaster and pack committee. The committee
includes volunteer parents of boys in the pack, and members of the
charter organization.
Volunteer
Leadership -
Thousands of
volunteer leaders, both men and women, are involved in the Cub Scout
program. They serve in a variety of positions, as everything from den
leaders to committee chairmen. Specialized committee positions
address areas such as fund-raising, membership, and chartered
organization representatives.
Like other phases of the Scouting program, a Cub Scout pack belongs to
an organization with interests similar to those of the BSA. This
organization, which might be a church, school, community organization,
or group of interested citizens, is chartered by the local BSA council
to use the Scouting program. This chartered organization provides a
suitable meeting place, adult leadership, supervision, and opportunities
for a healthy Scouting life for the boys under its care. Each
organization appoints one of its members as a chartered organization
representative.

You Can
Join Us - Boys
can join Cub Scouts any time during the year, and at any age between
Kindergarten through 5th grade. Here are the best ways to join:
-
Contact our membership chairperson Kirsten
at 928-3623.
-
What Does It Cost? -
Our pack
registration is $65 each year, and includes membership in the BSA, a
subscription to Boys Life
magazine, all scout advancement awards, and materials used in Pack-wide
activities, such as Pinewood Derby cars, and rocket kits, etc.
Additionally, Den dues are established by each Den, to pay for special
materials for Den level activities. Generally this has been about
$25 per year.
You'll need a uniform, and that can cost anywhere up to about $80.
Our pack has recently started a Uniform Exchange. We might have
various uniform parts available to offset the cost of your new uniform.
Just ask us!
The pack sometimes runs special outings, where additional fees may
be involved. Examples of this are sporting event tickets, museum
admissions, or camping reservations.
As a non-profit organization, we operate on an annual budget, and
organize a few fund raising events each year to ensure that the pack
remains solvent, and that everything goes to the boys.
Where Do We Meet? -
Our monthly pack meetings are held at Central Valley Elementary School on
Route 32, directly across from the Woodbury Commons. Den meetings
are usually held twice a month. Den meeting schedule and locations
are decided upon by the Den Leader and Den families.
The Advancement Plan -
Recognition
is important to young boys. The Cub Scouting advancement plan provides
fun for the boys, gives them a sense of personal achievement as they
earn badges, and strengthens family understanding as adult family
members work with boys on advancement projects.
Tiger
Cub - The Tiger Cub program is for first-grade (or age 7) boys
and their adult partners. There are five Tiger Cub achievement areas.
The Tiger Cub, working with his adult
partner
to earn the Tiger Cub badge. These areas consist of an exciting series
of indoor and outdoor activities just right for a boy in the first
grade.
Wolf
- The Wolf program is for boys who have completed first grade
(or are age 8). To earn the Wolf badge, a boy must pass achievements
involving simple physical and mental skills.
Bear
- The Bear rank is for boys who have completed second grade
(or are age 9). The requirements are somewhat more difficult and
challenging than those for Wolf rank.
Webelos
- This two-year program is for boys who have completed third
grade (or are age 10). As he completes the requirements found in the
Webelos Handbook, he will work on activity badges, attend meetings led
by adults, and become familiar with the Boy Scout requirements—all
leading to the Arrow of Light Award.
We want
every boy to haves access to the Scouting program. If the cost of
signing up and buying a uniform is too much, please let us know.
Arrangements can be made for scholarships. We maintain the privacy
of any recipient, and in return, the family can provide support to the den
and pack through volunteering and helping out at events.
Sponsors: We invite parents and businesses to inquire about sponsoring
a Cub Scout in this way. Your assistance helps our pack serve the
community. For details, contact your den leader, Dave Neilson (Pack
Committee Chairman), or Emory Smith (Cubmaster).
